After the Israelites came out of Egypt, God commanded Moses to build Him a sanctuary that He might "dwell among them" (Ex. 25:8). This earthly tabernacle -- and the temple that followed it -- served as a "copy and shadow of the heavenly" (Heb. 8:5).
Much like God's seven annual Holy Days, the tabernacle and the temple illustrate His plan of salvation. The altar of burnt offering foreshadowed Jesus Christ's sacrifice as our Passover Lamb, the laver of water pictured baptism, the Holy Place illustrated our service to God, and the Holy of Holies pictured His throne in heaven.
